Prof Cees Wittens presented the ALTA® stent concept at LINC, highlighting a new approach to treating complex iliofemoral venous disease.

Venous Stent B.V. today announced that Emeritus Professor Cees Wittens presented the ALTA® modular venous stent concept at LINC, highlighting a new approach to treating complex iliofemoral venous disease.

During his presentation, Prof Wittens outlined the limitations of traditional continuous tubular venous stents in anatomy that is naturally tapered, curved, and dynamic. He described how these limitations can contribute to vessel straightening, reduced conformity, restricted side branch flow in low porosity designs, and the need for multiple overlapping stents in long lesions.

The ALTA® stent is designed as a multi segmented, tapered system using high radial force segments connected by flexible nitinol links. This architecture is intended to allow the vein to dictate the final shape, preserve natural venous geometry, and enable treatment of long iliofemoral disease with a single adjustable length stent.

Prof Wittens also discussed the potential clinical benefits of higher effective porosity between segments, including support for collateral flow and endothelial healing, with the aim of improving long term outcomes.

A first in human study is planned for early 2026, with a pivotal trial expected to follow.
